Do you want to make the most of your Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) and save taxes on your travel expenses?

If yes, then this newsletter is for you. In this edition, we will cover everything you need to know about LTA, such as what it is, who can claim it, how it is taxed, what are the limitations, what documents you need, and how to handle different situations that may arise. Read on to learn more and plan your next trip with confidence.

What is Leave Travel Allowance?

Leave Travel Allowance policy is implemented by many organizations to provide employees with a financial benefit to undertake vacations. Leave Travel Allowance is an allowance that an employee receives when travelling on a leave. However, a lot more goes into claiming these tax benefits.

Eligibility Criteria for Claiming LTA Exemption

To claim LTA benefits, you must be a salaried employee and have taken leave to travel within India with your family. Your family includes your spouse, children, dependent parents, and siblings.

Tax Implications of LTA under the Income Tax Act, 1961

LTA offers tax relief on your travel expenses. Under Section 10(5) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, you can claim an exemption of actual travel costs incurred or the LTA amount received from your employer, whichever is lower. Remember, LTA is exempt only for two journeys in a block of four calendar years.

However, please note that the tax exemption of LTA is not available in case you choose new income tax regime.

Limitations and Restrictions on LTA Exemption

●      Leave Travel Allowance applies only to domestic travel expenses and does not cover international travel.

●      The exemption is applicable only to actual transportation expenses (air, rail, or bus) and does not include accommodation, sightseeing, or meals.

●      Leave Travel Allowance cannot be claimed for journeys not undertaken or for journeys made by a hired vehicle.

Documentation Required for Claiming LTA Exemption

To claim LTA exemption, maintain travel-related bills, tickets, and boarding passes as proof of travel. Ensure that these documents clearly state the travel dates, mode of transportation, and the names of family members traveling with you.

Here’s an example of an LTA exemption:

Example 1: Mr. Sharma receives an LTA of INR 50,000 annually and incurs travel expenses of INR 40,000 for a family trip. He can claim an exemption of INR 40,000 as it is lower than the LTA amount received. However, the remaining INR 10,000 will be considered in the taxable income.

Bottom Line

We hope this comprehensive guide on Leave Travel Allowance has shed light on this valuable tax benefit. By leveraging LTA effectively, you can enjoy memorable trips while saving on taxes.
