The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax levied on most goods and services in India. A destination-based tax, it's collected at the point of consumption rather than the point of origin. GST has made the indirect tax system a lot smoother, replacing a complex web of central and state taxes. Registration is mandatory for businesses that meet specific turnover thresholds.
